What is Dependent Visa?
A dependent visa is a visa (status of residence) granted to the dependent spouse and children of a foreigner who holds a work visa. For example, let’s say there is a foreign family of three, where the father has a work visa, the mother is a housewife, and the children are high school students. In this case, the mother and child can live in Japan with the father by applying for a “dependent visa.” Additionally, adopted children of foreign nationals who have a work visa can apply for a dependent visa.
As a general rule, you cannot work on a dependent visa. If a foreigner with a dependent visa wants to work part-time, he or she can apply for a “Permission to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted” and be permitted to do so. However, there is a limit of 28 hours per week. In most cases, permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence granted will be granted without any problems. Therefore, be sure to obtain this permission before starting work.
